7 verses for those times when you feel anxious or worried
In the throes of the worst of my anxiety and depression I spent countless sleepless nights, lying in bed. Crying, sobbing, LAMENTING because of the intense anxiety that overran me. Many times I was on my knees simply saying over and over “help me God”.
During these times (and now) I clung to God’s Word – His promises that He would bring me through those dark nights, protect me and that no matter what anxieties and fears I had, that they would NOT consume me.
Today I am sharing 7 verses with you so that if you need some encouragement or a promise to remember on a sleepless night or whenever, you will have them. Because it is easy to forget that ultimately God is in control of our lives and that, really, we don’t need to worry. Easier said than done right!
1. PSALM 61. 1-4
“Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer, From the ends of the earth I call to You, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For You have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe. I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of Your wings.”
2. PHILIPPIANS 4. 6
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”
3. MATTHEW 6. 25, 34
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes…….therefore do not worry about tomorrow….”
4. PSALM 121. 1-2, 7-8
“I lift up my eyes to the mountains – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth…..The Lord will keep you from all harm – He will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”
5. ROMANS 8. 15
“The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about by your adoption to sonship. And by Him we cry Abba, Father.”
6. PSALM 94. 19
“When I said, ‘my foot is slipping,’ Your unfailing love, Lord, supported me. When anxiety was great within me, Your consolation brought me joy.”
7. LAMENTATIONS 3. 22-23
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”
The first Psalm I shared is my favourite verse and the one I always go back to when I need to hear God’s promise of protection. This verse describes me – faint of heart and looking for a strong shelter from worries. And it describes God as that strong tower, my refuge. Psalm 61 never fails to bring me peace when I am anxious.
These verses are appropriate today in light of the events that have been happening around the world in the past 2-3 weeks. They’re always appropriate of course but even more so I think when we see the darkness in the world and we worry what that means for us.
I hope that one or some of these 7 verses I have shared with you may resonate. If so, which ones? Or what is your favourite verse/verses? I’d love to know!
And as always, thank you for reading!
